about

Written and Directed by Oscar Jimenez (Amaru Tribe, ChibCha)
Mixed at Vibrating Planet Studio
Mastered by William Bowden

As a way to celebrate ‘Cultural Diversity Week’, Oscar Jimenez is proud to release the ‘Melbourne Community Song Project’ - a collaboration of 59 Melbourne-based creatives, representing 20 nationalities, who recorded a song and video written, directed and produced by Jimenez during the 2020 lockdown period in Melbourne, Australia.

The song (co-written with Jose Tortabu) traces the personal experience of a migrant falling in love with Melbourne, the city that has become their new home. The diversity of artists involved in the making of this song and video (edited by Carlos Meza), really highlights the strength and resilience of a community working together, albeit in social isolation, through some of the most difficult times the industry has ever experienced; and shows what can be achieved through connecting with peers to work collaboratively towards a common goal.

This is a real celebration of a true multicultural society, where the common language of music allowed the artists to create a sense of community, belonging and harmony in a time of upheaval, loss and uncertainty.

The recording included instruments from all around the world with 12 vocalists, 10 percussionists, 13 string instruments, 8 keys and 4 wind instruments.

Featuring:
Amaru Tribe (Oscar Jimenez & Katherine Gailer) Nina Rose, Jesse Witney, MEZA, Namrata Tivedi, Rayhan Sudrajat, Queen of Hearts Mariachi (Bonnie Smith, Elizabeth Obando, Stefania Serna) Quintero), Taj Aldeeb, Luis Poblete (Quarter Street), Cristian Saavedra (Labjacd), Rodolfo Hechavarria Despaigne Panga, Jose Tortabu (Scarycake), Jay Dabgar, Jorge Leiva (Miss Colombia, La Descarga), Damiano Spina, Marcelo Garcia and Stefano Mangiola (Wombatuque), Neda C Rahmani, Fred Nii Addo (One Spirit Africa), Rodrigo Salgado, , Irine Vela, Daniel Jauregui, Amadou Suso, Liana Perillo and Fabian Aravales (PEROLAS), Paloma Bica, Sarita McHarg, The New Monos (Leonardo Rodriguez, Javier Rodriguez and Brian COYA Lee), Abe Dunovits, Mindy Meng Wang, Kanghui Yu, Emiliano Beltzer, Agus Batara, Stephen Cuttriss and Paloma Bica (Melbourne Tango Orchestra) Salvatore Rossano (Santa Taranta), Vinod prasanna, Jayden Scarlett (Copperhead Brass Band) and Ed Farrar.

lyrics

Lyrics written by Oscar Jimenez
co-written with Jose Tortabu

Verse
Melbourne I never thought I love you
Melbourne out in the street I miss the Neighbors
Playing the music feel the flavors
Even on winter I love Melbourne

Some people dream about New York
But when they finally see the world
they know this will always be their home
Cause in their heart there is always Melbourne

Doesn’t matter where you come from
Everyone is always welcome
Colombiano, Chino, Griego
Italiano o Irlandes
Let this always be your place
Pa pa pa papa….!

Verse 2

Melbourne tell me what’s happening today
On Yarra river or Fedsquare
A busker singing in the lane
While all the people go their way
They are so lucky here in Melbourne

I love the colors in your walls
Behind the clouds I see the rainbows
Sometimes the traffic is a pain
Or the weather or the rain
But don’t you worry you are in Melbourne

Chorus
Doesn’t matter where you come from
Everyone is always welcome
Australiano o Chileno
Italiano o Irlandes
Let this always be your place
Pa pa pa papa….!

Spoken word by Luka Lesson

A love letter to little Athens
its alleyways and tiny chasms
the people
soon to be phoenixes
rising from the ashes

Soon there’ll be rappers back on the corners
buskers back on the streets
preachers on their boxes
lovers kissing by the Merri creek

May all the bullshit politics
only make you more united

May the Kaleidoscopic city
stay high-spirited and shining
